C.O.M.E.T. Fun @ Lake Piru

Frank Clayton shared these with me. He had some home video converted to DVD format. Would be fun to see the movies but just seeing me and Suzanne at 11 and 10 is wild. Lake Piru was pretty much a giant pasture full of cow patties, but we didn't care. We had a lot of good times there. Frank said it's much different now - see for yourself.

Here are two shots Frank took on his trip back there last weekend. The first is a view of the lake, and the second is the drainage pipe where I gouged my skull open. Ah, memories...

Oh my God, I remember the drain pipe and subsequent head splitting, the "do not litter" sign - and the cow patties! I also remember coming back from the lake and finding a cow had chewed on the top of our styrofoam cooler and a ground squirrel had chewed right through the wrapper and nibbled on our bread. It didn't spoil the fun one little iota though!

I don't remember the "Do Not Litter" sign - was it a joke or something? Frank mentioned it as being something I would get a kick out of but I have no recollection of it. The drainage pipe, for some reason, sticks in my head ; )

Yeah, I can see why the pipe memory "sticks in your head". Maybe Frank remembers something about the sign that I don't. I just remember it always being there. Obviously it is a replacement or it wouldn't look as spiffy after all these years.

I remember the drain pipe well, heads bleed a whole lot. I also remember the bathroom being up a big hill and having seances. I remember water skiing with the bus towing us and me not getting up and afraid to let go of the tow rope and being drug underwater forever.

I have to admit the water skiing scared the hell out of me. I did get up, but never got good at it. The only thing I'd be afraid of with water skiing now is that I'd dislocate my knee again. That thought alone ruins it for me. I'll stick to Wave Runners and be happy tearing up the lake on one any day.

Oh, yeah - about the cow chewing the cooler when we were away from the shelter...I remember waking up to find a cow next to me chewing through the cooler when for some reason we'd decided to sleep on top of the picnic tables instead of pitching a tent. That was weird.

Frank said that shelter is gone. Apparently the lake level was high enough to take it out, though it's gone back down again. A woman who's worked the gate at Lake Piru for six years told Frank she didn't know about any shelter ever being there.

Aunt Teresa, if you ever go water skiing, don't let Uncle Charlie drive the boat!!!!!

Tell me about it. I watched as he sent David flying into the lake in a tangled mess of arms and legs, all of which I was sure would be broken. He was trying to throw Ryan's smart ass off and David was collateral damage. Fortunately nothing was in fact broken.

Granted I was beyond sore the morning after, but I had the time of my life 'tubing with Suzanne and Charles. Suzanne probably had less fun since she flew A LOT further than me. As I've said before, skinny people sure do fly! :)
