Evil Cupcake Haters

Metro-Davidson (and a few other area school districts) are considering banning birthday cupcakes in school. They want to encourage healthy eating habits in our children. Gee, I thought that was MY job. But anyway, birthday cupcakes?! Come on now, it's not like they are served in class everyday, or even as often as once a month. Give the poor little kids a break. They deserve an occasional treat. That slop they serve in the cafeteria has changed very little from when we were kids. BAH HUM BUG TO THEM ALL! Again I say BAH-FREAKING-HUM-BUG!

I agree with you. If it is only once in a while it shouldn't do the kids much harm. The real culprit in American society is our lack of activity, and parents who let their children watch too much TV (which I am guilty of sometimes).

Why is everyone so damn un-American nowadays? No birthday cupcakes? We all know what I think about that...

I caught a glimmer of hope today. As a Valentine's Day treat Daniel's school served little cakes with lunch. AND they still say (for now anyway) the Pledge of Allegiance -- including the phrase "One nation, under God." As I said, a little glimmer of hope for my little one horse town.

FIGHT THE MAN! GIVE YOUR KIDS CUPCAKES!!!

I don't understand why the govt wants everybody to be skinny and eat fried salad all the time... As Americans we have the right to eat fatty foods and be overweight...It's none of their business...

I understand that they want more people to be healthy (I'm all for that), but taking away little childrens' b-day cupcakes is just mean...

All I have to say is watch "Supersize Me."

The problem with the way our kids eat isn't the once-in-a-while birthday cupcake. It's a diet that on a regular basis - and for many people it's every single meal - includes little or no fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains or other decent sources of fiber and vitamins. And while it may provide adequate protein it's usually not without a ton of salt and fat added to it. Sausage biscuits, loaded cheeseburgers, hot dogs, bacon-ranch-cheddar everything...and you would be darn surprised how much sugar is in all the crap they serve in school cafeterias and at fast food joints that ISN'T EVEN DESSERT. I bet there's as much or more sugar in the average cafeteria lunch as there is in one cupcake. Even chicken nuggets have sugar in them, for pete's sake.

People get used to a high level of salt and sugar and if food has a more normal level it tastes bland to them. Companies want to sell their food, so they put salt, sugar, fat, etc. and often add MORE crap so it will taste what people perceive to be better and they'll outsell the competition.

Last time I visited Cali, Janet and I were walking down the street and she remarked that she hadn't seen a fat person since we'd been there. People just tend to be more active there. I don't know if they eat better than here in the South but I'm betting most do. I do know it sure is a heck of a lot easier to be healthy when you eat out in California than it is when eating out in the South.

Next time you're in the supermarket, observe what the people in line with you are buying and look at whether they're fit or fat. I am always amazed when I do this. Well, I guess not really. I mean, I'm amazed that the 200lb. woman in line in front of me doesn't make the connection between all the Coke, white bread, Stouffer's Mac & Cheese, potato chips, frozen fried chicken, etc., she's buying and her fat arse. Not to mention the huge belly on the poor little eight year old with her. You're not supposed to be fat when you're eight!

Skip the nuggets, white bread, tater tots and macaroni and cheese, and go for a color palette on your cafeteria tray that is just a little more interesting than beige. Don't let THE MAN hold you down with food that makes you fat and ill. And don't eat hidden sugar - have it straight up, the way God intended, in a birthday cupcake with candy sprinkles!

I recently saw a TV program at the doctors office about the school getting rid of junk food in the vending machines. Some of the kids would bring in backpacks full of candy bars and chips to sell during the day. One girl made $50 in one day selling junk food to other students!
